Flush Bracket 2942: Southampton, Empress Dock, Engine House   

Flush Bracket on N. face of Engine House, 2 links from N.E. angle [2GL] - tentative identification of location; the 1910 1:2500 map, republished September 2007 by Alan Godfrey Maps, marks "Engine House" at this location, on the SW side of the entrance to Empress Dock, with BM BM 15.8 (above Liverpool datum) marked on the E face at the NE angle of the Engine House, probably the "Old B.M." (height 15.076ft above Newlyn Datum) included as a Side Level at 2GL - the suggested location of SU 4274 1000 replaces a previous suggestion of SU 4302 1060.

This flush bracket was used during the Second geodetic levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 12.5930 feet [3.8383 metres] above mean sea level (Newlyn datum). It was included on the Southampton to Tide Gauge, Empress Dock, Southampton levelling line. The surveyor's description was Flush Bracket on N. face of Engine House, 2 links from N.E. angle.

Logged on 9th August 2006 by RodS. Condition: Unknown.
No sign of FB around SU 4302 1060 (original estimated location); area totally redeveloped as residential. However, BM 3.93m, which *could* be the FB (though note that the height does not quite match), is shown on MasterMap at around SU 4276 1010 at the entrance to Empress Dock. This and various other locations within the docks are worthy of further investigation!
