This projecting bracket was used during the Second geodetic levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 131.7540 feet [40.1586 metres] above mean sea level (Newlyn datum). It was included on the Basingstoke to Wallingford levelling line. The surveyor's description was Bracket on battlement of Smallmead Bridge.

As lackofluke says, the PB is railside on the S side of the bridge. The decking and parapets of the bridge are new, but the buttresses are original.

On the S side W end of railway bridge, with the projecting bit pointing towards the railway lines.
