Flush Bracket OSBM 1288: Hertford, Old Oak PH   

Flush Bracket on N.E. angle of building, The Old Oak P.H., S. side of road, Hertford [2GL]; The Old Oar [sic], NW face, N angle (ODN 40.7870m, AGL 0.5, Levelled 1976). The 1890 Herts Public Houses Trade Directory gives the address as 35 Hertingfordbury Road, and the 1963 map shows a PH with a BM 133.86ft opposite #34. Building since lost to a doubling of the A414.

This flush bracket was used during the Second geodetic levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 133.7990 feet [40.7819 metres] above mean sea level (Newlyn datum). It was included on the Hemel Hempstead to Buntingford levelling line. The surveyor's description was Flush Bracket on N.E. angle of building, The Old Oak P.H., S. side of road, Hertford.

Looked again in passing, this time with SatNav, which puts FB in middle of dual c/way. Old houses N side of road, N side of what is now a service road. Any buildings S side of old road will have been lost when road dualled. New buildings S side of new road.

Visited on 30th March 2008 by RHW. Grid reference: TL 322 126. Condition: Couldn't find it.
No sign of PH S side of road; Harts Horns PH NW side of road just NE of rly bridge. Large houses opp Herts CC offices; one of them a bit pub-like but rendered.
