Flush Bracket OSBM 2820: by Pym Chair

Flush Bracket on gatepost, 75 links E. of junction of fence, 7 chains S.E. from Pym Chair, Embridge Causeway [2GL] - tentative identification of location; FB reported destroyed 25/05/1948; suggested location of SJ 99435 76672 is based on 2GL description and BM 1536.0 on old-maps (1881 - well before the FB was placed!). This would be 7 chains SW of Pym Chair, rather than 7 chains SE of Pym Chair as in 2GL description. This is now the corner of a rough parking area at the junction of roads. BM 467.90m is shown on LandLine around here, but is unrelated to the FB. Note that the description "Embridge Causeway" would indeed fit better with SE of Pym Chair (SJ 9969 7663), as in the 2GL description, though the height would not fit at all.

Had a good hunt around here despite the pouring rain, even checking several gateposts well away from the location just in case the gatepost had been reused! Note that the description "Embridge Causeway" would indeed fit better with SE of Pym Chair (SJ 9969 7663), as in the 2GL description, though the height would not fit at all. In any case, OS apparently have this FB recorded as destroyed in 1948 (i.e. the surveyors could not find it when doing lower order levelling!)

Many broken walls in the area but no gatepost seen. Only a fleeting visit so another look might find it.
