This bench mark was used during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 483.6270 feet [147.4095 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Penrith to Darlington levelling line. The surveyor's description was No. 48(d). Mark on West side of pillar of High Market Cross, at South end of Appleby-street ; 2.69 ft. above surface (p461).

The monument is at the top (south end) of Boroughgate. The cut mark is on the W face, painted black, on the base just above the steps. At time of visit it was 'hidden' behind a tray of flowers.
