10962: Gibraltar, Naval Stores

One of ten OS flush brackets, 10962 to 10971 inclusive, listed in the OS FB register simply as "Gibraltar".

"ORDNANCE BENCHMARK A0 (GRID REF. TF 8828 0136), FLUSH BRACKET 10962 ON NORTH-EAST ANGLE OF NAVAL STORES BUILDING SOUTH-EAST SIDE OF ROAD, CLOSE TO THE TOWER. HEIGHT OF BENCHMARK 3.810M (CHART DATUM)" (see http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/archive/arc0001/9000011/01-version/data/0-data/9000011.005 ).

Note that TF 8828 0136 above refers to MGRS 30S TF 8828 0136 - i.e. UTM 30S 0288280 4001360 (datum presumably ED50); BM 3.564m (above Alicante datum) is shown on the 1970 1:2500 map at about 30S TF 8828 0138, in a location which answers the description above.

"BM1 Naval Stores - Flush Bracket 10962 NE face of building, height 3.775m above Admiralty Chart Datum" (see http://www.pol.ac.uk/ntslf/pdf/gibraltar_report_POLid179.pdf - a (distorted) photo of "An Ordnance Survey bracket at the NE corner E face of stores building." is on page 19). The location is shown as 36° 07.927N 05° 21.250W (datum WGS-84) (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=36%C2%B0+07.927N+05%C2%B0+21.250W(Flush+Bracket+10962)&ie=UTF8&ll=36.15146,-5.354118&spn=0.105343,0.21904&z=12&iwloc=addr&om=1 )

========================================

The location, but not the number, of another Flush Bracket in Gibraltar was already known: "Cloister Ramp". (see http://bubl.ac.uk/org/tacit/TAC/tac34/feelingf.htm ). BM 6.692m (above Alicante datum) is shown on the 1970 1:2500 map at about 30S TF 8830 0241 (ED50) on the N face at the NE angle of the Central Police Station, on the corner of Cloister Ramp and Irish Town. This has now been identified as FB 10963.

========================================

A Flush Bracket also appears to be visible in some photographs of Europa Point Lighthouse (just to the left of the door; see http://www.lighthousedepot.com/database/uniquelighthouse.cfm?value=2176 ). However, it seems that there is NOT a Flush Bracket on the lighthouse; BM 24.708m (above Alicante datum), shown on the 1970 1:2500 map at about 30S TE 8905 9887 (ED50) on the lighthouse, facing west, has turned out to be a cut BM.

11710: No Ditch Bridge

"Railway Bridge", between FB 1362 and FB 1364, so presumably installed as replacement for FB 1363; measured height is similar, so tentatively assumed to be at the same location, but this could well be incorrect. Used in 1989 on relevelling of the line Clare to Wicken; height recorded as 11.2197m. Not in OS online database, so possibly also destroyed

S6502: Gurnos

Building, NE side of road, SW face, S angle - shown in OS database as "FL BR S6502 BLDG NE SIDE RD SW FACE S ANG"; The OS FB register also includes S6502 at SN 7744 0968 [SN1]. Note that S6502 duplicates the FB on Long Crag TP where the FB has also been confirmed as S6502. If anyone is visiting The National Archives at Kew, the records for line SN1 are held at OS 54/682 (Abstract CS 12: England and Wales; Line SN 1 to 7), and the details of this particular FB should be found on page 10.
